A little background on The Fat Pony Lodge.
My husband and I bought this property in 2014 with one small quirky miner’s cottage and a half-built mudbrick barn that was being used as a carpentry workshop by the previous owner. The Fat Pony Lodge is seeped in history and oozes eclectic charm. In the late 1800’s- early 1900’s the property was the township of Dry Diggings, a bustling goldrush town. The miner’s cottage at the front of the farm is the only remaining dwelling left from the goldrush and has had many lives. Originally built along with a row of goldrush infrastructure on the Midland Highway, it was one of the few surviving buildings that survived in a major fire in 1906. Originally the cottage was a general store with the kitchen being the local pub and living room a butcher store.
The Barn was re-imagined in 2015 and brought to its full potential with a team of local architects and builders. It now hosts 3 bedrooms, all with views of the surrounding gardens, farmland and bush. The lavish bathroom has bespoke wallpaper and a bath with views of horses. The property was designed specifically to incorporate the stained-glass windows that add to the whimsical appeal and brings the outside into the home. The house has been specifically designed to sit amongst the landscape and encompass every possible view.
The Cottage and The Barn are on 12.5acres of established gardens, grazing land and Australian remnant bushland. With three dams, various fruit and nut trees including apple, pear, quince, cherry, plum, feijoa, pomegranate, fig, lemon, apricot, olive, medlar, chestnut, hazelnut, nectarine and a small vineyard. With a vast established garden of over 50 types of roses, bulbs of numerous types, and lavender, jasmine, and daphne. We also have a vast range of both native and non-native visitors to the farm. A large herd of deer frequent the grazing land over the road, often only visible at dawn and dusk and are quite spectacular. Kangaroos, wallabies, echidnas, wombats, yabbies, numerous bird varieties (look out for honeyeaters, finches, herons, cockatoos, galahs, magpies, rosellas, parrots, owls and tawny frogmouths), possums, koalas, lizards, snakes and occasionally our chocolate labrador Grizzly pops in to say hello. And of course a fat pony or two!
